Mobility Project Europe

Projects submitted from other countries around the world - more detailed information can be obtained from the National Office.

England/Wales

Ozanam Centre, North Wales - provides holidays for people from all backgrounds. It is located in the Snowdonia National Park and is a useful base for those interested in hillwalking, climbing and other outdoor pursuits, and is just 8 miles from the sea. It also provides accommodation for families with a wide range of activities for children and adults. St Vincent's Support Centre, Leeds - provides a wide range of services to the local community:- a shop that sells furniture, clothing and food, a café, debt and general counselling services, IT training, hardship projects, education classes, a friendship group and a specialised help service for asylum seekers.

Spain

The 'Blue House' officially known as 'Our Lady of Refuge' is a shelter in Madrid for people who are suffering with AIDS and those welcome are now usually chronically ill with HIV but are endeavouring to reorganise their lives and reintegrate themselves into society. The Blue House is neither a hotel nor a hospital. It is a place to live, not to survive, and to hope, even to hope in the future. It has everything needed for a comfortable pleasant home which our guests often lack because of their own life circumstances. The Blue House is above all a group of people, consisting of residents, workers and volunteers, all pledged to provide a life project for these sick people and trying to give them the means they need to live independently.

Italy

All over Italy conferences work in prisons and many members find that prisoners love to express their feelings in writing. In 2002 the Livorno Conference (Tuscany) began an annual literature and poetry prize for all jails in Italy. There are hundreds of entries each year and the standard is really high. The prize giving takes place in a different prison each year and is sponsored by the Ministry of Justice and the International Book Fair in Turin.

Ireland

Ireland's project is called From The Ground Up and highlights local social justice issues. Typical FTGU issues:- Social Welfare/Low Income, Educational Disadvantage, Social or Private Rented Housing, Health Inequalities, Cost of Fuel or Food, Child Poverty, Money Lending, Rural Poverty and Isolation. FTGU is a method to gather and receive 'on the ground' SSVP experience, a way to bring the voice of the marginalised to the fore and the opportunity to lobby and change for improvement.

Belgium

Homework clubs and literacy centres - help to disadvantaged children who often drop out of school before they have gained any qualifications, thus risking unemployment when reaching adulthood. Objectives of the project - help children in primary school to acquire a method of working, encourage them, stimulate their interest in study and awaken their curiosity. This helps them become integrated into the school environment and allows parents to follow their childrens progress.

Hungary

Hungary's project is a handicapped childrens concert each year. They buy musical instruments and pay for the music teacher. To play music helps the development of these children and is also an opportunity for musical school children to introduce themselves. The children prepare all year long which gives them something very useful to focus on and helps them develop their musical talent.
